We seem to be constantly seeking a sense of “wellness,” but what does wellness even mean within a system that is leaving so many so unwell? American Detox , written by longtime yoga teacher and social justice activist Kerri Kelly, invites us to explore how capitalism, individualism, perfectionism, and white dominant culture have warped our approach to “wellness,” limited access to “wellness” practices, and fundamentally left many of us unwell.
The American Detox Book Club is an invitation to go through this journey of awakening, detoxing, and recovering in shared community. Zahra Abbassi and I will co-facilitate the book club meetings.
At the beginning of each Sunday afternoon session, I will lead a short restorative yoga practice. We hope this will set the tone and create the conditions for a deep, focused discussion that comes from a place of gentle inquiry and tender curiosity. Each session will end with an integrated closing meditation from Zahra, followed by tea and refreshments for continued conversation, hosted by EndlessOM.
